助动词 (do, does, is, have) 经常在文本中替代整个句子的一部分。例子:

    • more in winter than they do in summer – do 替代 yawn,
    • and neither/nor do people with…
    • not just/only a sign of – 不仅仅是一个标志。

For questions 1–8, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap. There is an example at the beginning (0).

    Why do we yawn?

Almost everyone yawns, but surprisingly little is known about (0) 为什么 we do it. It was once thought that yawning helped to bring more oxygen (1) the body. Experiments, however, have shown this (2) be untrue. A more recent theory is that yawning helps to cool the brain down (3) it gets too warm.

People certainly seem to yawn more in winter (4) they do in summer. Yawning is also famously contagious: just reading about it may make you (5) the same. Interestingly, we are more likely to catch a yawn from people we are close to (6) from strangers.

Young children under the age of four rarely catch yawns, and (7) do people with certain medical conditions. (8) this suggests is that contagious yawning may be linked to empathy. There is still much to learn, but one thing is clear: yawning is not just a sign of boredom.
