C1 Advanced Open Cloze – bostezos y verbos auxiliares

Las palabras auxiliares (do, does, is, have) a menudo reemplazan en el texto todo un fragmento de la oración. Ejemplos:

    • more in winter than they do in summer – do reemplaza yawn,
    • and neither/nor do people with… – negación con inversión,
    • not just/only a sign of – no solo un signo de.

For questions 1–8, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap. There is an example at the beginning (0).

    Why do we yawn?

Almost everyone yawns, but surprisingly little is known about (0) why we do it. It was once thought that yawning helped to bring more oxygen (1) el cuerpo. Experiments, however, have shown this (2) ser falso. A more recent theory is that yawning helps to cool the brain down (3) se calienta demasiado.

People certainly seem to yawn more in winter (4) lo hacen en summer. Yawning is also famously contagious: just reading about it may make you (5) lo mismo. Interestingly, we are more likely to catch a yawn from people we are close to (6) de strangers.

Young children under the age of four rarely catch yawns, and (7) lo hacen people with certain medical conditions. (8) esto suggests is that contagious yawning may be linked to empathy. There is still much to learn, but one thing is clear: yawning is not just a sign of boredom.
