  • C1 Advanced Use of English Part 2 Quiz No 3

C1 Advanced Open Cloze – test 3. A popular science text about why we yawn and why yawning is contagious. The test checks auxiliary verbs, comparisons, and constructions with nor/neither.

C1 Advanced Open Cloze – yawning and auxiliary verbs

Auxiliary words (do, does, is, have) often replace an entire fragment of a sentence in the text. Examples:

    • more in winter than they do in summer – do replaces yawn,
    • and neither/nor do people with… – negation with inversion,
    • not just/only a sign of – not just a sign.

    How to solve?

Before you start typing, read the entire text – some gaps can only be filled after understanding the next sentence. After an incorrect answer, you will see a hint with the rule, and then you can check the key. Write correctly spelled – in the Cambridge C1 Advanced exam, a typo means losing a point.

Test 3 from the series C1 Advanced Open Cloze. After solving, return to the gaps with auxiliary words – this is a common topic in the exam.

For questions 1–8, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap. There is an example at the beginning (0).

    Why do we yawn?

Almost everyone yawns, but surprisingly little is known about (0) why we do it. It was once thought that yawning helped to bring more oxygen (1) the body. Experiments, however, have shown this (2) be untrue. A more recent theory is that yawning helps to cool the brain down (3) it gets too warm.

People certainly seem to yawn more in winter (4) they do in summer. Yawning is also famously contagious: just reading about it may make you (5) the same. Interestingly, we are more likely to catch a yawn from people we are close to (6) from strangers.

Young children under the age of four rarely catch yawns, and (7) do people with certain medical conditions. (8) this suggests is that contagious yawning may be linked to empathy. There is still much to learn, but one thing is clear: yawning is not just a sign of boredom.
