📖 FCE Reading and Use of English Part 5: Multiple Choice

Welcome to the true „Reading” section of the exam! Part 5 features a long text (usually an article, an extract from a novel, or a biographical piece) followed by 6 multiple-choice questions. Each question has four options: A, B, C, or D.

    • Scoring: Every correct answer in Part 5 is worth 2 points! This makes it an incredibly important section for the final score.
    • The Core Focus: This part tests detailed understanding of a text, including the writer’s opinion, tone, purpose, main idea, and specific details. Students must also be able to understand the implication of certain phrases and how the text is organized.

    📋 The Step-by-Step Strategy

Reading a long text can be overwhelming under time pressure. Teach your students this highly effective strategy:

    1. Read the Title and Skim (The 1-Minute Rule): Read the title and skim the text very quickly just to get the general idea (the „gist”). Do not stop at unknown words.
    2. Read the Question, NOT the Options: Look at the first question, but cover the options (A, B, C, D) with your hand. The options are designed to trick you!
    3. Find the Evidence: The questions are always in chronological order. Question 1 is usually in paragraph 1, Question 2 in paragraph 2, etc. Go to the relevant paragraph and find the answer in the text yourself.
    4. Match and Eliminate: Now, look at options A, B, C, and D. Which one matches the answer you found in the text? Cross out the options that are definitely wrong (distractors).
    5. Beware of Word Spotting: Cambridge loves traps. If an option uses the exact same words as the text, it is very often the wrong answer! The correct answer will usually be a paraphrase (the same meaning expressed with different words).
