    THE UNSTOPPABLE RISE OF E-SPORTS

    E-sports is booming. Stadiums that once hosted massive rock concerts and traditional sporting events are now regularly packed with thousands of screaming fans watching video gamers compete on giant screens. [ 1 ] 它是一个全球现象,完全出乎传统娱乐行业的意料。

    The professional players are treated exactly like superstar athletes. They practice for up to 12 hours a day, perfecting their strategies and team coordination.     Furthermore, the financial rewards involved are staggering. Global tournament prize pools can reach tens of millions of dollars, rivaling the biggest events in golf or tennis. [ 3 ] In addition to these tournament winnings, top-tier players earn substantial monthly incomes from livestreaming their practice sessions to loyal fans at home.

    Despite this massive commercial success, some critics still refuse to acknowledge e-sports as 'real’ sports. They argue that sitting in a comfortable gaming chair in front of a computer screen requires no genuine physical exertion. [ 4 ] After all, they argue, games like chess and darts are widely recognized as sports despite requiring minimal movement.

    Looking ahead, the gaming industry shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Mobile gaming, in particular, is opening up massive new markets in developing countries. [ 5 ] This unprecedented accessibility means that the next world champion could be virtually anyone with a reliable smartphone and an internet connection.

    There is currently even serious debate about including e-sports as official medal events in the Olympic Games. [ 6 ] Whether or not that historic milestone is eventually reached, competitive gaming has already firmly cemented its place in modern youth culture.
    A Defenders, however, point out that intense concentration, tactical thinking, and rapid hand-eye coordination are definitely physical skills.

    B Consequently, many top organizations employ nutritionists, physical therapists, and sports psychologists to keep their rosters in peak condition.

    C Such a move would undoubtedly legitimize the activity in the eyes of traditional sports fans and older generations.

    D Traditional sports are currently losing television viewership because young people prefer playing video games at home.

    E Just a decade ago, competitive video gaming was a niche hobby played in dark basements, but today it fills arenas worldwide.

    F Major brands, ranging from energy drinks to luxury car manufacturers, are eager to sponsor these massive events to reach a younger demographic.

    G Unlike expensive PC setups that cost thousands of dollars, mobile devices are relatively cheap and widely owned across the globe.
