C1 Advanced Multiple-choice Cloze – test 2. The text concerns “wildlife” returning to cities (urban rewilding). In this test, you primarily check compound verbs (phrasal verbs) and dependent prepositions.
C1 Advanced Multiple-choice Cloze – phrasal verbs and prepositions
Phrasal verbs and prepositions after adjectives and verbs are one of the most common targets of questions in Part 1. Examples from this text:
- wake up to something – start to notice something, realize,
- back something up – confirm, support with evidence,
- fond of, contribute to – adjective and verb with a dependent preposition.
How to solve?
All four options usually have similar meanings, so the meaning alone is not enough. Ask yourself which word creates a fixed collocation with the surrounding context, and which one just “sounds good” in Polish. After an incorrect answer, you will see a hint, and only then can you check the correct answer.
Test 2 from the series C1 Advanced Multiple-choice Cloze – solve it after test 1, and then move on to the next one.
Letting the city grow wild
Across Europe, city councils are beginning to (0) wake up to the idea that nature does not belong only in the countryside. Neglected patches of land that used to be mown every week are now being (1) to grow wild. Within a few seasons, wildflowers, insects and birds have (2) back in large numbers. Supporters argue that rewilding is not only good for wildlife but also (3) to residents’ wellbeing.
Not everyone, however, is (4) of the idea. Some residents complain that the long grass makes their neighbourhood look untidy and (5) for. Others worry that it will attract pests, although there is little evidence to (6) this up.
To bring residents on (7), some councils invite them to help plan the new wild areas. Local schools have also got involved, (8) advantage of the meadows as outdoor classrooms. If the trend continues, the neatly trimmed lawn may soon be a thing of the past.
