Time Present Simple – foundation of English grammar

Time Present Simple is an absolute foundation and usually the first tense we encounter in English lessons. It is used to describe our daily life, routines, and laws of nature. Let’s see how to master it from the basics to advanced nuances.

    Part 1: For beginners (Fundamentals)

At the basic level, the rule is simple: we use this tense to talk about habits, routine activities, and general facts. These are things that happen regularly or are always true.

    1. How do we build sentences?

The construction in affirmative sentences is extremely simple, but it hides one famous trap that beginners stumble upon:

    • For persons I, you, we, they (I, you, we, you, they): we simply use the base form of the verb (e.g. play, work).
    • For persons he, she, it (he, she, it – i.e. the so-called third person singular): to the verb we must add the ending -s or -es (e.g. plays, works, goes).

In questions and negatives, auxiliary operators come into play: do and does (for he, she, it). Remember that when does or doesn’t appears in a sentence, the main verb returns to its base form (loses the „s”)!

    Examples of usage:

    • I drink coffee every morning. (I drink coffee every morning – routine).
    • She works in a bank. (She works in a bank – permanent situation, remember the „s” at the end works!).
    • Water boils at 100 degrees. (Water boils at 100 degrees – unchanging scientific fact).
    • Do you speak English? (Do you speak English? – question with the operator do).

    2. Words that should raise a „red flag”

These are called adverbs of frequency. If a sentence contains a description of how often you do something, it’s a sign that you usually need Present Simple:

    • always (always)
    • usually (usually)
    • often (often)
    • sometimes (sometimes)
    • never (never)
    • every day / week / year (every day / week / year)

Part 2: For advanced (Nuances and contexts)

When daily routine no longer holds any secrets for you, it’s time to learn about situations in which Present Simple goes beyond the bounds of „ordinary present”. You will be surprised at how many things it can be used for!

    1. Schedules and timetables (Timetables)

This is an extremely important application! We use Present Simple to talk about the future, provided that it results from a predetermined schedule, television program, or lesson plan. (In contrast to Present Continuous, where we talked about private, personal arrangements).

    • The train leaves at 8:00 AM tomorrow. (The train departs tomorrow at 8:00 – this is the official schedule, the train has no free will).
    • What time does the film start tonight? (What time does the film start tonight in the cinema?).

    2. Reviews, summaries, and sports commentary

To give statements dynamics, native speakers often summarize movies, books, or comment on live sports matches at that time.

    • Harry Potter discovers he is a wizard and goes to Hogwarts. (Harry Potter discovers that he is a wizard and goes to Hogwarts – a typical summary of the plot).
    • Lewandowski passes the ball and scores! (Lewandowski passes the ball and scores a goal! – a very quick live commentary).

    3. Zero conditional (Zero Conditional)

We use it in „0” type conditional sentences to express 100 percent certainty, laws of physics, or ironclad rules. In both parts of such a sentence (both in the condition and in the result), Present Simple is used.

    • If you mix red and blue, you get purple. (If you mix red and blue, you get purple).

    4. Agreement with stative verbs (Stative Verbs)

As you may remember from the lesson on Present Continuous, verbs describing states (e.g. know, like, believe, understand) usually do not take the -ing ending. Their natural environment, even if they describe our state exactly at that specific second, is Present Simple.

    • I understand you now. (I understand you now – it would be a mistake to say I am understanding).
    • She loves this song. (She loves this song).
