Reading comprehension in the eighth-grade exam: How to tackle multiple choice?
Task on reading comprehension with multiple choice is a key element of every paper in the eighth-grade exam – both in Polish and modern languages. Although it seems that the correct answer „is served on a platter,” statistics show that this is where students often lose points due to carelessness.
What does the closed task with text involve?
The mechanism is simple: you receive a source text and a series of questions in which you must indicate one correct answer (usually from options A, B, C, and D).
What skills does the examiner check?
- Information retrieval: Finding specific facts in the content.
- Inference: Understanding what the author wrote „between the lines.”
- Main idea: The ability to name the topic of a paragraph or the entire piece.
- Detail analysis: Distinguishing the character’s opinions from the facts described by the narrator.
Beware of distractors! Typical traps from CKE
The creators of exam tasks use so-called distractors. These are incorrect answers designed to mislead you. What to watch out for?
- Similar vocabulary: The answer contains words from the text, but their meaning is completely changed.
- General truth, but missing in the text: The sentence is true in reality, but the author of the text did not mention it.
- Half-truths: The beginning of the answer agrees with the content, but the end contains an error.
Effective strategy for max points
Apply these three steps to avoid mistakes and speed up your work with the sheet:
- First questions, then text: Read the instructions before reading. This way, your brain will immediately start filtering the text in search of specific answers.
- Elimination method: Cross out options that are obviously wrong. Reducing the choice to two options drastically increases your chances.
- Proof principle: Before you mark an answer, find a specific sentence in the text that confirms it. If it’s not there – keep looking!
